The Monmouthshire Railway Society finally ran it's Demon Docker railtour on Saturday 6th July 2002, the tour originally having been postponed from October 2001. The tour started from Newport and visiting the lines into Newport & Cardiff Docks before heading for Tondu & Margam via Barry and finally a trip up to Ebbw Vale with what could be the final railtour on that line for some time. The two photographs below show 37038 waiting in Platform 1 of Newport Station waiting to depart and finally departing for the first leg of the tour to Newport Docks
The following two photos show 37197 bringing up the rear of the tour of the tour as it enters Newport Docks. The first photo shows the tour just after entering the docks at the North end of the North Dock. While the second photo shows 37197 crossing the docks entrance road.
On the final leg of the tour 37038 is seen on the climb up from Ebbw Jnc to Parc Jnc at the rear of the Harlech Retail Park on Cardiff Road, Newport
37038 is seen on the climb up through Llanhilleth, before negotiating the sharp curve at Aberbeeg where the line once met with that to Abertillery
With journey's end almost in site (Ebbw vale is below the far hill), 37197 is seen at the rear of the train as it leaves Cwm and heads towards the Waurnllwydd (Ebbw Vale). Although the track is in reasonable condition, trains will be no more on this section soon as the Corus steel plant at Ebbw Vale finished production on the day before the tour. Passenger trains will return to this stretch of line in 2005 when new services from Ebbw Vale to Cardiff will commence.
A view looking down the valley towards Llanhilleth, 37038 is seen at the rear of the train as the train descends back down the valley. This photograph was taken from the village of Aberbeeg which is located on the hillside on the western side of the valley.
